Why Runners Drink Coffee

Coffee has become an integral part of runners’ routines. It is no longer just a drink to wake them up in the morning, but it has turned into fuel for long runs and races too. Some people have experienced some side effects which include dehydration, jitters, insomnia, etc., but many people still depend on their morning cup of Joe for a quick pick-me up.

Running and coffee have an interesting relationship that has spanned over decades. It is not just runners who drink it, but everybody around the world drinks their morning cup to get through the day. Coffee drinkers will tell you about how they cannot start their days without caffeine hitting them in the form of a hot cup of coffee.

Many people who run feel the same way about their first morning runs and having a cup of coffee to get through it! Whether they drink one or two cups, runners have become accustomed to adding one extra activity in their lives – running with caffeine. Some might argue that there are no benefits from drinking as much coffee as runners do, but it sure makes for a good excuse to grab some coffee and go!

Nikki and Tracy completed the Chicago Marathon in 2008. It was a life changing experience for them both. They consider themselves lucky to have had such an incredible race day! Over the 26.2 (gotta include the .2 or its not a marathon) mile journey, we really felt like the entire city of Chicago came out to cheer us on. We had such a great experience that we want to spread the word and hopefully help some other runners have just as amazing of an experience.

The 5 Best Tips We Received for Race Day

Marathon runners can have a lot of questions about what to do on the actual race day. There are so many things that could go wrong and it’s important to try your best to prepare as much as possible before getting out there. Here is what really helped Nikki and Tracy on race day:

  1. Make sure to eat plenty of carbohydrates the night before and breakfast on race morning. The more energy you have, the better!

  2. Wear whatever clothes that make you feel comfortable but make sure they are dry too. You don’t want to be freezing or overheated during the race! (don't forget the nipple tape and to clip those toenails)

  3. Don’t get caught up in a time goal. Make sure you have a reasonable time to aim for, but don’t let it stress you out too much if your pace isn't what you hoped it would be.

  4. Bring plenty of water and snacks with you on the course during the race. You can share with other runners and it'll make the whole experience more fun!

  5. Put YOUR NAME on your shirt! It allows the people to call your name during the race.
